Author Guidelines

A. General Description

Kanun: Jurnal Ilmu Hukum, is a periodical peer-reviewed journal published by Faculty of Law Universitas Syiah Kuala since 1991. This journal also publishes english article prioritizing the law study research. Kanun: Jurnal Ilmu Hukum produce three serials annually (April, August, and December). Kanun: Jurnal Ilmu Hukum encourage legal experts, academics, practitioners, NGOs activists, doctorate and master students, and legal observer to publish their Article in this journal.

Kanun Jurnal Ilmu Hukum accepts Article especially original research articles.

D. Writing Guide

Every author must ensure that the manuscript uploaded is following the requirement set by Kanun Jurnal Ilmu Hukum, as follows:

  1. Manuscripts uploaded to the Kanun Jurnal Ilmu Hukum have never been published either partially or entirely.
  2. Manuscript uploaded is original scientific works and do not plagiarise. A Turnitin attachments which have a similarity of not more than 22% should be attached as evidence.
  3. Each manuscript submission should be complemented with the author's curriculum vitae (50-100 words).
  4. The manuscript length is 12-15 pages or 3,500-4,500 words (including pictures, graphics or tables [if any]). It should be submitted in A4 sized paper, Times New Roman font, fonts size 12, and 1.5 spacing, with top margins 4, left 4, right and bottom 3.
  5. The manuscript should use standard terms and language. A literature review should include in the structure of the manuscript. Quotations from the literature review should directly be included in every section.  
  6. The manuscript needs to be complemented with the Manuscript Title, Author Name, Author Institution, Institution address, Author email address, Abstract, Keyword, Introduction, Research Method, Research Results, Discussion, Conclusion and Bibliography.
  7. The sponsor's name (if any) could be written in the first-page footnote. The sponsor's name is related to acknowledgement to the funding institution and/or person who has helped finish the Research and write the Article
  8. Wikipedia and other open sources are not permitted to be cited as sources. The page source quoted should be a website that can be scientifically justified.

E. Writing Systematics

Manuscripts sent to Kanun Jurnal Ilmu Hukum should be organized as follows: Title of Manuscript, Full Name of Authors, Author Institution / Institution, Address of Author Institution, Email Address and Author's Contact, Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Research Methods, Research Results and Discussion, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

  1. Manuscript Title


  1. Author Identity

Author identity includes the full names of the authors [authors]. For more than one author from the same Institution, the names should be written on one line. One address of the same Institution should be enough to represent all names. Emails and contact numbers are for the correspondence author only. Meanwhile, for authors from different institutions, they still have to include their email and contact number. For identity, use Times News Roman font with font size 12.

  1. Abstract


The abstract should briefly explain the purpose of the research, the method used in the Research, the research outcome and its Discussion, conclusion, and any suggestion and recommendation related to the study. The abstract should be limited to 130-150 words

  1. Keyword

Keyword: [Written using Times New Roman, font size 12, consist of 3-5 keywords, separated by the semicolon (;) for every keyword]

  1. Introduction

The introduction should use Times New Roman font 12, justify with space if 1.5. The introduction will consist of problem background, theoretical or conceptual framework, analytical gap, the proposed problem, and state of the art in the research problem. The gap can be presented by explaining the das solen and das sein. The explanation should cover the reason why it is crucial to conduct the Research. The state of the art of the study can be shown by comparing several previously published articles, at least three of them.

  1. Research Method

The research method should be written using Times New Roman font with 12 font size, justify, and space of 1.5. The research method should include the Discussion of the method of approach, research specification, data collection type and technique, also analytical data method.  Regarding the conceptual ideas article, the study approach method's Discussion should be sufficient at the end of the Introduction chapter.

  1. Research Outcome and Discussion

Research outcome and Discussion should be written using Times New Roman font with 12 font size, justify, and space of 1.5. This chapter will accommodate the research results or any scientific finding, followed by a scientific discussion of those findings. The topics elaboration in this chapter should be done in analytical descriptive, and critical approach. The elaboration should follow a chronological order from the main legal issues discussed in the Research. Theories or concepts that are included in the theoretical framework or conceptual should be quoted in this chapter. In the conceptual idea article, the term Discussion should be used, and it will cover sub-chapters that chronologically similar to the proposed problem. The explanation that needs to use bullet or Arabic number should be written in sentence form. It is prohibited to write such a description in a listing manner. For instances: All this time, the local resident can utilize two way in dealing with a civil problem, thus are: (1) Litigation; and (2) Non-Litigation.

  1. Conclusion

A conclusion should be written using Times New Roman font, size font 12, justify, and space 1.5. The chapter essentially contains the essence of the Discussion and the final answer to the proposed problem in the Article. Therefore, the arrangement of this chapter should chronologically follow the sequence of the issues discussed. The conclusion chapter can also be used to test or prove whether the Research's purposes are achieved or not.

  1. Acknowledgement

The acknowledgement can be placed before the bibliography. The acknowledgement should only be addressed to the parties contributing to conducting the research and writing the article. Acknowledgement should be written using Times New Roman font, font size 12, justify, and space of 1.5.

  1. Bibliography

A bibliography should be written using Times New Roman font, font size 12, justify, and space of 1.5. the bibliography should only contain references that are used in the Research. In writing the bibliography, the author should use American Psychological Association (APA) 6th Edition style. Having at least 20 references in every Article is obligatory. It is highly recommended that the references used in the Research are from the bibliography in the last 10 years. It is permitted to use the reference later than the previous 10 years if that reference is the only reference available and hold such an essential material for making the Article. The bibliography should consist of 60% primary sources and 40% other sources. Primary sources include national journal, international journal, thesis, dissertation, research paper, and national or international conferences. Other sources include books or other sources of references.

  1. Table, Graphics, Figure, and Demonstration

Every Article may have details such as table, graphic, figure, and demonstration. The Article that has such a point should explain briefly and necessarily the mentioned details. Such an explanation is put right above the mentioned details. It is important to note that the material should be in JPEG or GIF to not scatter in the case of demonstrations and pictures.

Also, every table, graph, demonstration, and figure included in the Article should be numbered with an Arabic number and a title. The title is placed on the top. Sources of reference should be mentioned on the left below. For tables, it should not contain vertical lines, while horizontal lines are allowed but only the important ones

  1. Conceptual Articles

Conceptual articles are specialized for essential issues that must be resolved. The composition of the conceptual Article is the same as the research article, except that the findings section only contains Discussion

F. In Note/Body Note and Bibliography

All quotations and sources can be written as direct quotations and indirect quotations. Each Article should prioritize direct quotes. However, for the explanation that cannot be avoided, indirect quotations are permitted. If the full-text quotation is more than 4 lines, the writing should start and end with a quotation mark ("..."). All quotes should be written in the body note text. Example: (Mansur, 2017), (Warassih, Sulaiman, & Fatimah, 2018), (BPS, 2017).

Footnotes can be used only for essential explanations that cannot directly be written in the text and will change the meaning of the Article if not explained. Each quotation should be written in Times New Roman, size font 12, justify, and spacing 1.5.

A bibliography should be written following the American Psychological Association (APA) 6th Edition style. The classification is as follows:
