UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS’ INTRINSIC AND EXTRINSIC MOTIVATION IN STUDYING ENGLISH REGARDING CHANGES IN AGE

Abstract


Human is born with high curiosity that helps them to be motivated in doing something such as learning a new language. According to Pérez (2007), the effect of age on language acquisition is one of the main topics in linguistics and second language acquisition. Someones capability in acquiring the second language is higher in this critical period. This research aims to investigate whether the increase in age influences students motivation in learning English. The participants of this study were three undergraduate students of English Language Education Department, Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh. As this is qualitative research, the data were collected through a semi-structured interview. The result of the study demonstrates a significant relationship between age and motivation. Students age affects the way they think just as the way they perceive English. In this case, the changing of age leads to the changing of goals and motivation. In addition, the participants were more extrinsically motivated.
