INCREASING ENGLISH TEACHERS’ COMPETENCE THROUGH PRINCIPAL’S MENTORING SUPERVISION

Abstract


The present study was driven by the teachers low instruction skills in English classrooms of SMP Negeri 1 Jeumpa. The study aims to improve the teaching skills and active role of the teachers through the process of mentoring supervision carried out by the principal. The direct supervision by the principal was used as a mentoring method provided in this modeling, by emphasizing on the aspects considered necessary to be directly improved. The School Action Research was employed as the type of research, carried out in two cycles. Each of the cycles consists of four stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection/evaluation. The observation sheet was utilized as the instrument, applied during the implementation of learning in the classroom throughout the supervision. A total of seven English teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Jeumpa Aceh Barat Daya in the school year of 2018/2019 were selected as the subject of the study. The subject was chosen based on the preliminary investigation results as well as referral from direct supervision by the principal. The assessment results from the supervision in the odd semester were obtained to be an average of 62.47. This eventually increased to 85.47 after the treatment of mentoring supervision of the English teachers. The success rate of mentoring supervision was 23%, and in cycle II the success of teachers instruction reached 85%, which was after the mentoring supervision has been conducted by the principal.
