ELABORATING FUNCTIONAL GRAMMAR IN THE EFL CLASSROOM CONTEXT AND ITS IMPLICATION

Abstract


The key concept of functional grammar is facilitating the EFL learners to be academically successful by viewing language not only as a group of rules which build a sentence. Teaching grammar is not simply viewed by introducing language as a sequence of rules. It is formed of the smallest part of the language elements where letters, words, phrases, and sentences are built to be a paragraph in a unity. This paper presents a brief understanding on the application of functional grammar, the nature of functional grammar, the key concept of functional grammar, the fundamental distinction between functional grammar and traditional grammar, and its implication for English teaching and learning. It is hoped that by having a brief understanding toward functional grammar concept and its application, it positively affects teaching English for EFL teachers in a new perspective of teaching strategy.
