Abstract

This study aims to measure the effect of work engagement and self-efficacy on individual performance with a personal initiative as a mediating variable. The object is the students of faculty of economics and business, Universitas Syiah Kuala and the amount of the population is 2612. The sampling technique used is proportionate stratified sampling to determine the amount of the sample and it provides as much as 350 respondents. Data is collected using questionnaires. The result proves that work engagement affects individual performance, self-efficacy affects individual performance, work engagement affects the personal initiative, self - efficacy affects the personal initiative, personal initiative affects individual performance, personal initiative mediates the effect of work engagement on individual performance, and personal initiative mediates the effect of self - efficacy on individual performance. Both indirect effects are in partial roles. These findings contribute to the realm of science that updates the causality theories from the previous and can be a reference for further research. This research model is also can be a mind map for the practical ones, like creative persons to take the opportunities related to the variables, or for policymakers to set up the policies. The originality rests in the combination of the causality theories from the previous to be together in one research model, and the statistical approach that uses linear regression and Sobel test. The limitation resides in the object scope.
